NaPoWriMo Day 30

 Hello!

The prompt for today is to write where the speaker is compared to a character from myth or legend.  My very first NaPoWriMo poem was about Aphrodite, so I decided to end this year by circling back to the beginning and using that as inspiration for my poem today. Enjoy!

Aphrodite's Day Off

It's Aphrodite's lazy day
a time to let her cares float away.

Her yoga pants make her butt look good
but she wears her oversized comfy sweater, the one with the hood.

Her clothes have stains, her hair is a mess
she's the goddess of beauty but from her appearance you'd never guess.

Today she is away from other's eyes
so has no need for her sexy guise.

Though men always think of her as sublime
a goddess doesn't need to be beautiful all the time.

Today she will do whatever her heart does desire
and tomorrow return to causing hearts to be set on fire.

NaPoWriMo Day 29

 Hello!

For today's prompt, it's to take inspiration from a list of unique words from Taylor Swift songs.   I chose the word Incandescent from the list as it reminded me of how previous co-workers and friends have called me a light.  I still don't know exactly what that means, but I tried to see through their eyes and write about that. Enjoy!

Incandescent

Here I am, I am a light
my personality, my aura, shines bright
an incandescence that is felt, not seen with sight.

Here I am, you can feel my glow
dress as a sparkly rainbow
colourful incandescence is my status quo.

Here I am, and here I shine
my heart and soul together align
confident incandescence is now mine.

Here I am, my joy does radiate
I'm told to be around me feel great
incandescence joy that does not abate.

NaPoWriMo Day 27 and 28

 Hello!

Yesterday I was moving, and had internet issues, so I wasn't able to post my poem.  So here is the poem for yesterday and today.

Yesterday the prompt was to write an American Sonnet, which is just a sonnet, but with less rules.  I took inspiration from the anxiety I was feeling from moving to a new place.  Enjoy!

The anxiety fills me
a ball of electricity in my chest
making me jittery
upsetting my stomach
and making my thoughts run in circles
such a big change
so much to do
what about this and what about that
so much to consider
my mind and body race around
planning and doing all I can
and then we are there
in the moment with you beside me
and all the anxious feeling fades.

For today the prompt is to write a sijo, which is a Korean poem related to the haiku. I was hungry at the time, thinking about making lunch, so that is what inspired this poem today. lol.  Enjoy!

Gather the vegetables, meat, herbs, rice, sauce, and flour
Spend the hours making a delicious meal from scratch
A feast for the eyes and soul and photos on Instagram.

NaPoWriMo Day 26

 Hello!

The prompt for today is to write a poem that plays with sound, specifically repeating sounds in words.  Right now I'm in the process of moving, so I used that as inspiration for my poem today.  Enjoy!

Move the massive mound of my material possessions
taking crates of books and trinkets to the waiting truck
boxes and bags of belongings bounce
as the moving van travels to the vicinity
of my new home.

NaPoWriMo Day 25

 Hello!

The prompt for today was to take inspiration from the Proust Questionnaire which asks questions that reveal truths about you.  I decided to run with one question in particular:  What is your prized possession?  Enjoy!

Freddy

My prized possession has no monetary value
Not my jewelry or fancy clothes
Not my electronics or pretty trinkets
But rather a plush yellow dog
Freddy.
A plush toy given to me before I was born.
A reminder of joy and childhood mirth
A story of where I have been
And a reminder that I will never be alone.
The one thing that has been with me through everything.

NaPoWriMo Day 24

 Hello!

For today the prompt is to take a line from an existing poem and use it to create your own.  I have a few poems that I remember from grade school, when I first experienced and fell in love with poetry, and when trying to think of an existing poem to take a line from it was one of those poems that popped into my head.  My poem starts with the line from that poem, about how cats sleep anywhere, but I wanted to take it in a silly direction and while the original poem talks about more normal places cats sleep, I mention all the stupid and ridiculous places where cats can be found sleeping.  Enjoy!

Cat sleep anywhere
any table any chair.

Under a blanket, on the bed
comfortably on top your head.

In a shoe box on the floor
right in front of the bathroom door.

In your closet with your clothes
hiding somewhere no one knows.

Between the cushions on the couch
in your favourite hoodie pouch.

Halfway up the Christmas tree
somewhere they aren't suppose to be.

To a cat the world's their bed
anywhere they'll lay their head.

NaPoWriMo Day 23

 Hello!

The prompt for today is to write a poem about a superhero.  And easy topic for me in that I like superheroes, I'm a big fan of DC, so I thought about my favourites, and decided to write about the Flash.  The style for the poem is something that came naturally as I thought about what to write.   It has a galloping feel/meter to the poem which fits with the idea of the Flash running super fast everywhere.  Enjoy!

The Flash

My name is Flash
I love to dash
'round Central City and the world

So fast I run
it's so much fun
to use my powers to save the day

Run circles I go
punching to and fro
to stop the bad guys in their tracks

Go over here
then over there
a hero's work is never done

My current life
is filled with strife
but I wouldn't change it for anything

Now you can rest
knowing the best
is out there saving you from harm.

NaPoWriMo Day 22

 Hello!

The prompt for today is to write a poem about two things arguing.  To random things arguing.  While deciding what to write about I was eating a donut from my morning work meeting.  And I was reminded of how on the weekend I had both a brownie cake pop, and a regular chocolate cake cake pop, and how there was a comparison of how brownies were better.   I thought the idea of an argument between which pastry was better would make for a good poem, and settled on donuts vs brownies as that idea flowed best.  Enjoy!

The Brownie and the Donut

The brownie and the donut
are having quite the day
spending hours arguing
who's better in every way.

The brownie says, "I'm chocolaty
and sometimes filled with nuts
so rich and satisfying
much better than donuts."

The donut says, "I'm light and fluffy
with sprinkles and icing
and I come individually
no need for my slicing."

The brownie says, "but chocolate's better
much tastier than your dough
to make me is quite simple too
you don't need to be a pro."

The donut says, "I'm colourful
and many flavors have I
there is so much variety
that people want to try."

So on and on the pastries go
there is no end in sight.
While they are busy arguing
of both I'll take a bite.

NaPoWriMo Day 21

 Hello!

The prompt for today was to focus on colour.  Right away my mind jumped to an article I read recently about "why are the curtains blue".  Referring to the idea that in books a lot of analysis can be done about the little details and colours that authors put into their stories.  Sometimes those colours have meaning, other times the curtains are just blue, but the idea is that you have to ask if those details are important or not, if they have more meaning or not.  So I used that as the inspiration for my poem.  Enjoy!

The Curtains Were Blue

The curtains were blue
it set the mood as I surveyed the murder scene
the blood red on the floor contrasting
the calm blue of the interior design.

The curtains were blue
and covered with sequences and embroider
in my youth I wanted to be a designer
my sadness of those lost dreams reflected in the blue.

The curtains were blue
once thick and vibrant
now faded and threadbare
in the window of the old motel.

The curtains were blue
the rest of the room all white and clean cut
the statement piece of the room
to draw the eye to the ocean view outside.

The curtains were blue
but they could have been red, or green, or gold
I don't know why they were blue
but I can wonder why they were not another colour.

NaPoWriMo Day 20

 Hello!

For today's prompt, it is to write a poem about a historical event.  To be honest I was having an off day, and thought of the discovery of the laws of gravity, and how there was rhyme there and just ran with it.  Enjoy!

The discovery
of the theory
of gravity
made history.
Human inquiry
is a slop slippery
to solve the mystery
of our would glittery
to then offer a delivery
of laws to describe our world.

NaPoWriMo Day 19

 Hello!

The prompt for today is to write a poem about something that haunts you, but afterwards change "haunt" to "hunt".   I decided to write a triolet because this prompt has a spooky feel to it and the triolet structure always feel spooky and uneasy to me.  Yesterday I was talking with someone about imposter syndrome, so I felt it was a good topic for this poem.  Enjoy!

I'm an imposter and soon I will fail
hunting by the knowledge that I'm not good enough
my carefully crafted façade is so frail
I'm an imposter and soon I will fail
To keep this going forever will be of no avail
The truth will be exposed and life will be rough
I'm an imposter and soon I will fail
hunted by the knowledge that I'm not good enough.

NaPoWriMo Day 18

 Hello!

The prompt today is to write a poem where the speaker wants to be something or someone else.  It was quite natural for me to write about wanting to be a panda, since they are the greatest.  lol   Enjoy!

In my next life I want to be a panda bear
my life would be simple, I'd live without a care.

Sitting around and eating bamboo
then fall over a nap, that's what pandas do.

Eating, and sleeping, with some running around
my home is whatever place I pick on the ground.

All roly and poly and cuddly too
a panda's life is simple, nothing required to do.

After all the frustration, exhaustion, heartache, and stress
the simple panda life is what I'd like the best.

So if there is such thing as reincarnation
to next be a panda would bring me elation.

NaPoWriMo Day 17

 Hello!

For today's prompt, the idea is to take inspiration from a song.  I recently watched the musical episode in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and I've had Flying Blind stuck in my head, so I decided to run with it.  I changed up the words to part of the song to be something more meaningful to me. Enjoy!

Colours Shine

I see all my friends so wonderful
being themselves, so comfortable
They know who they are and also who they want to be.
Let down my defense
and have their flawless confidence.

To finally be a new version of me
the one in my heart!

It might be time to let my colours shine
if only I could unlock my heart to the world
my anxiety
is downing me
keeping me locked within myself
Shining bright! How would that feel?

NaPoWriMo Day 16

 Hello!

For today's prompt the idea is to have a surprise twist at the end of the poem.  I know this kinda spoils the surprise for my poem today, but I can't think of a better way to mention the prompt.   Inspiration for my poem today came from my work, and a conversation I had with a coworker a week or so ago.  Enjoy!

Dream Job

I drag myself out of bed exhausted
and trudge to work on the bus
A mountain of work awaits me
too much for just me to do
and not much help to get it done.
I pick something and dive in.
It's not long before the questions start
about things not working or what to do next.
I scramble for answers.
My day is constant triage
which projects will I work on now
and which will be late.
Our system needs constant improvements
and it's walking against the current trying to fix it.
Another day with not enough things completed.
But I am making an impact
And things will get better.
My dream job.

NaPoWriMo Day 15

 Hello!

The prompt for today is to take inspiration from stamps.  There are lots of odd and interesting stamps from around the world over the years.   For my poem I took inspiration from past poems I've wrote where it has a "write what you see" kind of feel to it.  I used that idea to write about the different stamps I was seeing online.  Enjoy!

Stamps

There's a black cat at a table
with a little yellow dish
several confused monkeys
and some penguins who want fish.

There's a shrimp and rainbow sea slugs
and a royal cartoon mouse
a lonely little puffin
and a Snoopy without his house.

There are several cats and landmarks
and an eagle with a snake
a group of fluffy bunnies
and a hippo jumping over a lake.

There's a vase full of blue pansies
and a letter holding fox
The art of stamps is wonderful
every letter put in a mailbox.

NaPoWriMo Day 14

 Hello!

Today's poetry prompt is anaphora, when a word or short phrase is used repeatedly in a poem.  The structure was simple enough, but I had trouble coming up with a topic to write about.  Took me most of the day to think of something.  Not sure how this idea came to me, but it seemed like something I could work with, so here it is.  Enjoy!

A Change of View

Flip onto your back and look up at the clouds.
Flip the page over and write another idea.
Flip the pancake in the pan; golden brown on both sides.
Flip the table over and cause the papers and game pieces to fall everywhere.
Flip society's norms and remove the toxic standards.
Flip your Nintendo to evolve the pokemon.
Flip up the flag; a new package in the mail box.
Flip the page of the book to see what adventure awaits.
Flip the pillow for coolness against your face.
Flip how you see the world and become something more.

NaPoWriMo Day 13

 Hello!

The prompt for today is about rhyming poems.  I was really into playing my Niantic games today, so I took inspiration from those games and wrote a poem full of rhyming. Enjoy!

Niantic Life

Today an agent in Ingress
The world unseen is quite a mess
I must confess
It brings me stress
To capture portals, create links and fields with success
But onwards I press
Into every recess
That I can access
To aid with the mission of the Enlightened.

Today a trainer in Pokemon Go
Walking around at a quick tempo
For pokemon I search, then ball I throw
My team of pokemon does grow
Of their types and moves I know
Out in the sun, rain, or snow
Going with the flow
Someday, the world I'll show
That I am the very best.

Today a player in Pikmin Bloom
These little creatures around me they loom
Some even wear a little costume
And together we zoom
For more there is always room
Planting flowers to chase away the gloom
The air is filled with flower perfume
As we tackle a nearby mushroom
And fill the world with flowers.

Today a keeper in Peridot
Beside me a colourful creature does trot
Walking in weather both cold and hot
Against the blight we have fought
In our travels a new friend it has brought
This one has a cute spot
A baby they have begot
It has a tail like a knot
Another new colourful pet to love.

Today a hunter in Monster Hunter Now
To hunt down the monsters is my vow
A path of destruction they do plow
To my fear I will not bow
Armed with weapons I pow
The monsters fall with help from thou
We take their parts, like the eyebrow
To hunt again is how
The life of a monster hunter goes.

NaPoWriMo Day 12

 Hello!

The prompt for today is to write a poem that's a tall tale.  I was having some trouble coming up with an idea, and decided to take inspiration from the Zelda game I'm playing.  A lot of what happens in those games, if taken out of context, sounds a little unbelievable and exaggerated.  So I figured it would work as a tall tale.  Enjoy!

Down into the depths I go
with Zelda by my side.
We find a mummy sealed down there
then the ground cracks open wide.

Zelda slips and starts to fall
I can not grab her hand.
She disappears in golden light
and I wake up in a new land.

A broken sword is all I have
as I try to find my way.
What's happening in Hyrule now?
Do I need to save the day?

NaPoWriMo Day 11

 Hello!

Today's prompt is all about the number one, since it is the 11th day of the month.  I took the challenge of writing a one line poem, a monostich, which lead me to the idea of writing 11 monostiches to make a bigger poem.  Enjoy!

Musings of my Day

I hear the rain beat upon the metal roof as I sip my tea and read.

The melancholy I feel because of the precipitation outside triggers existential thoughts in me.

The contrast of the navy blue shirt with the faded teal hair causes it to shine more vividly.

I look up at a sea of stars; am I the only one?

What can be considered a tea: earl grey, soup, Saturn?

The dopamine rush from the beep of the scanner as another order is now complete.

Embroidered flowers on a notebook cover are symbolic of my prose.

Shiny axolotl judge my working habits.

The cookie dunks it in the icing for the ultimate snack.

Warm pizza pockets chase away the hangry.

My life going into boxes as soon a new chapter begins.

NaPoWriMo Day 10

 Hello!

The prompt for today involved a link to a site that has funny clips from old news papers to use as inspiration.  There was one where someone had commented that hair blowing in the wind is never as nice as it is describes in books.  It made me laugh because I've seen memes about that and have experienced it myself.  So I wrote a poem about it. Enjoy!

Hair in the Wind

I stand on this cliff edge
overlooking the ocean
watching the ships sail away
taking my beloved to new lands.

A strong wind blows
pulling at my shawl
causing my skirt to dance
and blowing my hair... into my face

It clings to me in the breeze
getting caught in my eyelashes
sticking to the ocean spray on my cheeks
and tickling my nose.

I brush the hair from my eyes
to watch the ships go
but the hair is back a moment later
and some strands poke my eyes.

Why did I envision this would be a special moment
and not the tangled mess it is.

NaPoWriMo Day 9

 Hello!

For today's prompt the challenge is to write an ode about a mundane object.  While trying to decide what to write about, I was thinking how it's suppose to rain later.  A chance of thunderstorms.  I thought that I'll be ok because I always have my umbrella in my bag, just in case.  Which made me realize just how much I love my umbrella, so here is an ode to it.  Enjoy!

Ode to My Umbrella

My dear umbrella you keep me dry,
when rain is falling from the sky.

Your swirling colours of black and green,
ensure that in the gloom I can be seen.

For as the cars go zooming by,
I'm forced to walk and heave a sigh.

The rainy weather I do despise,
But my dear umbrella you hear my cries.

You rise up and open above,
for all your efforts you have my love.

Keeping all the drops away,
you bring some sunshine to a rainy day.

Without you I'd be cold and wet,
a grumpy mood in me would set.

But with you there I feel content,
because the soggy feeling you do prevent.

My dear umbrella, I give appreciation,
for always standing at your station.

NaPoWriMo Day 8

 Hello!

The prompt for today is to write about an encounter or relationship between two things that shouldn't have met.  Today is also the solar eclipse, and I live very close to the path of totality and I'm excited to view it.  Part of me wanted to write a poem for the prompt, but part of me wanted to write about the eclipse, and then I realized I could merge the two ideas into one.  It was a challenge, but I hope you like my poem for today.  Enjoy!

The Eclipse

The sun and the moon meet in the sky
their dance usually keeps them apart
dancing away then towards
sometimes close but never touching.

But today they meet
today they embrace
And the sky breaks.

Darkness where there should be light
Stars where there should be blue.

They meet for only a brief moment
But their encounter shakes the world!
and changes the fate of all in their path.

The meeting of the sun and moon
an event that ripples outward
until they meet again.

NaPoWriMo Day 7

 Hello!

The prompt for today is to take inspiration from old postcards and the statement "wish you were here".  It got me thinking of the places I've traveled to, and I decided to write a series of haiku's that reference places I've been and invoke a feeling of wishing that a loved one was with them at the time to view the same sights.  Enjoy!

Wish you were here

Monolithic rocks
standing tall on Stonehenge hill
wish you were here now

An art museum
with tulips made of metal
wish you were here now

In a gondola
the green-blue waters around me
wish you were here now

The grand mountains loom
I watch from the pavilion
wish you were here now

A castle ahead
with princesses and their friends
wish you were here now

A cruise ship sailing
many islands in the sea
wish you were hear now

I see my front door
my comfy bed and your smile
I am with you now.

NaPoWriMo Day 6

 Hello!

For today's prompt the idea is to write a poem using a piece of weird wisdom.  Something someone said to you once that sounds weird, but is good advice.  I couldn't think of anything off hand, so I decided to look online and found a Doctor Who quote that inspired the poem I wrote.  Enjoy!

What's the use of a good quotation if you can't change it?
What's the use of a good quotation if you can't modify it?
What's the use of a good recipe if you can't modify it?
What's the use of a bad recipe if you can't modify it?
What's the purpose of a bad recipe if you can't modify it?
What's the purpose of a bad memory if you can't modify it?
What's the purpose of a bad memory if you can't learn it?

NaPoWriMo Day 5

 Hello!

Today's prompt is based on a poem that takes three unrelated things and compares their views on an abstract idea.  For my poem I didn't really have an inspiration in particular other than I love pandas and thought it would be a good place to start.   Enjoy!

A Blessing

A blessing, said the bamboo,
is warm sunny days
and cool rainy nights.

A blessing, said the panda,
is fresh green bamboo
growing in a grove nearby.

A blessing, said the girl,
is a warm and fuzzy panda
to cuddle my worries away.

NaPoWriMo Day 4

 Hello!

Today's prompt is to take inspiration from an old book from the 1950's that talks about strange scientific things in the world.  While scrolling through it I found a section about crabs.  It reminded me of this silly inside joke I have with some friends about crabs wearing boots.  So I ran with the idea and wrote this poem.  I decided to go with the haiku format as it's a favourite of mine and I hadn't written any haikus yet this year.  Enjoy!

The life of a crab
wearing boots and a top hat
run along the beach

Legion of war crabs
step in perfect formation
dive down into sand

The Jedi sea crab
with anemones in hand
attack any threats

NaPoWriMo Day 3

 Hello!

Today’s prompt is to write a surreal poem.  When looking up inspiration for my poem I was reminded of my jelly bean picnic poem from a few years ago.  I decided to use that theme for a new poem.  Also, that poem was written because Easter usually falls in April.  This year it was at the end of March so I realized there would be no Easter inspired poem this year.  So this is also inspired by Easter themed poems which I won’t get to do this year.  Or rather I am doing now?  I haven’t quite figured it out myself.   lol enjoy!

The easter festivities are over
The jelly bean picnic has ended.

No more songs from the watermelon and the peach
their beautiful harmonies with undertones of berry blue.

The chocolate and the strawberry tumble into the gloom
awaiting the year for the party to begin once more.

Pear with its vile sneer
making everyone's lives miserable.
Delicious as a fruit, but awful as a jelly bean.

Forever at war are lime and green apple
Who is the best flavor of green.

Black licorice in the corner forgotten
always alone
never loved even in the crowd.

We wear pink on the days following the picnic,
Bubblegum, cotton candy, and strawberry daiquiri always the height of fashion.

Orange and lemon debate who is the best citrus
lime joins in, they can't resist a fight.

Easter festivities are over,
but life continues on.
Another year more until the jelly bean picnic.

NaPoWriMo Day 2

 Hello!

Today's prompt is to write a platonic love poem.  It could be about a family member, or a friend, or food, etc.  Immediately at the mention of food, I was reminded of my Ode to Peach that I wrote back in 2020.  It's one of my favourite poems so I decided to write another ode to another food that I love.  In my opinion odes make for really great love poems so it fit perfectly with the prompt for a platonic love poem.  Enjoy!

Ode to Chocolate

My dearest chocolate, you make my day,
and make the sadness go away.

Your sweet flavor and creamy brown look,
one glance at you is all it took.

For me to want your soft embrace,
and savor your dark chocolate taste.

With you the darkness disappears,
and helps alleviate my fears.

I know I can do anything,
filled with the sugar that you bring.

On days when I feel sick or mad,
your company moves me to glad.

Milk or white, ruby or dark,
a passion within me you always spark.

This ode to chocolate, my favourite sweet,
I'm grateful for each time we meet.

NaPoWriMo Early Bird and Day 1

 Hello!

It's NaPoWriMo again! Yay!
Like last year I have a lot going on in my life right now, so I'll do my best to post a poem every day, but we will see how it goes.

While I wrote a poem for the early bird prompt, I didn't complete it until just before bed, so here is both the poem for the early bird prompt and Day 1 prompt.

For the early bird prompt it was to pick a word form a short list and write about what it is.  Well, as in past years, I'm playing another Legend of Zelda game right now, and with "sword" as one of the words on that short list, it was a natural choice to write about the Master Sword as it relates to Tears of the Kingdom.  Enjoy!

The Sword

The sword is destroyed
Corrupted by evil
And broken to bits

A golden glowing light
Whisks my sword away
To a new time, a new place
To repair evil's doing.

Rumors of a legendary sword
Perhaps in the forest to the north
Lost in an ancient wood.

I go, questing forth
To find the blade to banish evil
To save this land
For I am its champion.

For the Day 1 prompt, it was to write a poem that summarizes a book you enjoy but haven't read in a long time.  There were a few books that popped to mind, but I had read them a few years ago, so I felt that was still too fresh.  Instead I decided to go with a childhood favourite (and still a favourite) book that I can't remember the last time I read it. I'm going to leave it a mystery as to _which_ book it is, but if you've read it, or know of it, it should be rather obvious.  Enjoy!

The Receiver

An ordinary boy
With an ordinary family
In an ordinary house
Living an ordinary life.

Comes time for him to be a man
To get his job assignment
His place in society
The Receiver.

Receiver of history
Memories of pain and pleasure
Of heat and cold
Of love and loss.

An explosion of colour
A shift in how he sees his world
While everyone else
Continues on in black and white.

No longer can he bare it
He runs away with baby in tow
To a new world
A winter paradise.

Thanks for reading!  Here's to another awesome month of poetry!
